The Politics in Management

The success of every organization usually can be determined through the kind of management it has. Executive directors, general managers, supervisors and the administrative divisions play essential roles in managing an organization or company which includes looking over the welfare of the members/employees and at the same time managing the over-all developments of the company. Accordingly, it is not easy to manage a company as there are many factors to be considered carefully without compromising other important factors such as norms and ethics, employee and management relationship, performance and outcome. With the meticulous consideration of all aspects affecting the organization and the tight competition in the market, one can truly say that management is not an easy task since it requires political will and, sometimes, harsh judgments for the greater good - not to mention, the enemies one can develop because of said decisions.

Politics can be considered as one of the major hindrances for the smooth process of development in a company and the harmonious relationship among workers within. According to some, organizational politics is a one big fat reality in every organization, may it be in a big corporate world or within just a mere organization of cooperative. Politics is an intrinsic and unavoidable factor that adversely affects (if not prevented) a company (hence, the term some people used as "politicking").

"Politicking" is perceived by many as a self-serving behavior wherein one advances his/her own (or sometimes done by a group or union) agenda or interest at the expense of other people's welfare. It also adversely affects the goal of the organization as a whole since such behavior interferes with the smooth flow of the organization, creating differences and divisions in the group. The existence of "politicking" is usually brought by personal conflicts within the group, competition of power, disgruntled members, and jealousies in the leadership and control of members, finances and associates (in general).

Organizational politics also boils down to the kind of management the group has. It should be taken into mind that the presence of a leader or manager is important in a group and that his/her influence to the members or to the subordinates has an impact on the over-all performance of the group. Disgruntlements and conflicts within the organization are usually brought upon by the treatment of the leader to his/her every member, and to the organization as a whole. Favoritism and biases are inevitable, but showing it obviously is something that can be managed. It is not a hidden fact that the political climate in an organization basically depends on the relationship between the rank-and-file and the management. Hence, the management should utilize political leverage in order to address the various situations hounding the organization, making it a point that concerns of all parties involved should be addressed. In a way, this is also part of "politicking" because of doing such, and being diplomatic about it, will benefit generally the organization and further realizing its goals.

Managing a company or an organization still boils down to proper implementation of rules and regulations that both benefit the management and the workers. Organizational politics cannot be prevented, and it does not construe negativity all the time as, sometimes, "politicking" has its own advantages and contributions in the success of a group, citing as such as a corporate tactical move.
